A Strong Foundation For Yoga - An Eco Friendly Yoga Mat

Yoga as an exercise consists of many postures and bodily positions that some may find unnatural. These postures, called asanas in yoga terminology, require coordination, control, and balance. Some are relatively simple, with the practitioner or yogi seated and twisted to one side. Others are more than a little intimidating, such as the handstands and back bends. Performing on a hard surface such as a wooden floor can be uncomfortable, especially when holding positions for significant lengths of time. A good start for any yogi is to find and acquire a good eco friendly yoga mat.

Mats made for the practice of yoga are usually made of rubber or natural fibers. With a mat like these, a yoga practitioner can be more comfortable performing asanas, since they have a cushioning layer underneath them. The bony regions of the body such as the knees and elbows will experience less pressure, and are less likely to bruise in case of impacts.

Rubber mats are good for yoga especially if they are the non-slip types. Non-slip rubber ensures that the mat stays firmly planted on the floor, and will not move even when in use. Imagine what disasters could occur if mats slipped out from underneath yogis as they execute asanas. They could fall over and bruise something, or even dislocate joints, which would certainly ruin the yoga experience. Indeed, an eco friendly yoga mat provides a strong foundation for yoga as an exercise.

In your search for a good mat for yoga exercise, there are a few things you need to consider. First is the shape of the mat. A mat designed for yoga should be long and rectangular, and ideally should be as long or slightly shorter than the user's height. This allows the user to stretch out fully on the mat, which is useful in certain asanas like back bends. The width of the mat is something very much worth noting. The width will affect how easily you can position yourself, as well as how far apart you can set your hands and feet. The wider the mat, the easier it is for you to stay within the mat, and the wider your hands and feet can be planted. These are vital to achieving and maintaining balance, as a wider base means more stability for a standing structure. In this case, the standing structure is the body of a yogi held in a standing position, bent-body arc, or handstand.

If you can find an eco friendly yoga mat, the better. These "green" mats are made with natural materials or materials whose manufacturing processes do not harm the environment. You can feel better practicing yoga when you are not worried about what harm you might be causing to Mother Nature with your consumerism. Smart consumerism should be the practice of every single person in the effort to save the world, so try to look past the premiums placed on eco-friendly products. With that said, these mats are useful and worth more than the price you pay for them.

Online Yoga Teacher Internet Community

How has the Yoga teacher community managed to flourish so quickly? It seems to have occurred around the time the web made rapid advancements in technology. There is no coincidence in the timing of the popularity growth of Yoga and Internet video technology. Here is what happened and why.

Until recently, most Yoga practitioners were dependent upon training with their Guru, in small groups, or training alone with a book. Without constant stimulation, feedback, or guidance, most students did not participate in Yoga long enough to experience the long-term benefits of regular practice.

Words like "self-realization" and "transformation" can be a mystery, if you practice Yoga without ongoing support. This is where Internet-based Yoga education has been so crucial in the global popularity of Yoga. At this time, any student or teacher of Yoga, can find resources which help one sustain a steady practice.

In turn, the global Yoga teacher community has made web-based resources available for the public. Anyone can learn how to practice Yoga for preventative health, pain management, ailments, physical rehabilitation, or reduction of chronic stress levels.

Evidence, in the form of benefits experienced by long-term practitioners, can be seen in the current economic crisis. Instead of resorting to alcoholism and drugs, a large portion of the public has opted to practice Yoga in classes with like-minded people.

This is in stark contrast to the numbers of people, in the past, who engaged in substance abuse the moment times got tough. This is also an indicator that the long-term benefits of Yoga practice have been realized outside of India. Constant reinforcement, of clean living and a healthy lifestyle, has begun to show its true worth.

These positive changes, in the behavior of societies, worldwide, will contribute to a global economic recovery. People need to think clearly in order to find viable solutions. For example: The pursuit of clean energy solutions will help us now, but future generations will thank us for it. This is only one example of how the Yogic mind-set has managed to influence the global community.

To think clearly, to let go of greed, and to train the mind, are basic principles of Yogic philosophy. This is why online resources, for Yoga education, are so important. We sow the seeds today for a brighter future tomorrow. Instead of plundering the earth for every natural resource, we can logically approach problems with solutions that will permanently help future generations.

Consider the alternative: Our past history, as a species, has shown we make some terrible mistakes. Yet, we have managed to advance despite ourselves. Imagine what good we could accomplish if we work together. This is why the online Yoga teacher community exists. All we have to do is keep spreading the message.

Yoga Shorts

From layering to stand alone pieces, yoga shorts have become an essential must-have in practicing yoga. Their appeal has blossomed throughout the yoga community. They are a means to either stay cool during the summer months or to look fashionable during the cooler seasons. Some people even use them as cover over tight yoga pants, to help their confidence during yoga sessions.

Whichever reason you choose, shorts or cropped pants are a staple in any fitness wardrobe. Like so many other yoga apparel staples, shorts come in a large variety. From micro-shorts, to longer more conservative varieties. You will find a pair to fit your body and fashion needs. From beautiful prints, vibrant colors and sleek fabrics. Whether you want a drawstring, or a smooth seamless line. There is an option for everyone!

While many people think of them as little more than your standard workout wear. These shorts are specially made just for yoga. Giving you the ability to move freely, without the concern of flashing someone behind you. They can be seen made from conventional materials, to organic blends. Which will help you to feel better not only about your yoga session, but keeping our earth free of harmful chemicals as well. Which, as you might already know. Will help you to achieve a higher sense of inner peace, in knowing that you are helping our world.

Don't worry guys! There are apparel options out there for you too. While they are typically much longer than a woman's short. They still provide the freedom of movement that the female version does. Giving you a leg-up in your yoga lessons.

The only downside to yoga shorts, is that they aren't as readily accessible as you might want. Most mass-market retailers often times offering simple workout wear that isn't conducive to yoga. Instead, you will need to find a specialty store. Either online or locally, they will offer you a wide variety of prints, colors, and styles for you to choose from. With so many different options to choose from, the price range can vary as well. Giving everyone the ability to afford a pair of athletic shorts. Yoga Sutras Discourse: Decide to Unclutch & Drop Your Mind Now

From the works of Living Enlightened Master Paramahamsa Nithyananda. In this clip taken from Patanjali Yoga Sutras discourse 11 (Sutra 14), Swamiji sheds more light on the deeper secrets about body and mind. Swamiji describes his very own experience of the process of psychological death where He used this very technique of Patanjali for enlightenment. When he sat at Manikarnika Ghat with resve to sit there forever, the power which was resisting lost hold on His consciousness. That very moment the mind came back to the present moment. Your idea about the future plays a major role in your present actions. Swamiji then teaches us that the idea you have of your body and mind is either your best friend or your worst enemy. Happiness, joy, bliss are nothing but the ideas we have of our mind and body. The complete Patanjali Yoga Sutras series may be ordered online at www.lifeblissgalleria.com.

Teaching Peace in Yoga Class

In conjunction with the Global Mala Project designed to unite the worldwide yoga community on the UN International Peace Day (September 22, 2007) I have been inspired to teach yoga this fall through the mantra of yoga as peace in action. Naturally some questions arise: What is peace? How do you teach peace in a yoga class?

Although everybody seems to have an innate understanding of peace, it becomes a difficult state to describe. In the context of a global community peace is understood as the cessation of war. On an individual level peace can be described as calm, serene, silence, equilibrium and harmony.

Yoga naturally lends itself to a quest for peace. Yoga is a process of releasing dis-ease and tension in the body to quiet the mind for meditation. With yoga we can find peace within ourselves. Once the individual achieves peace in their own lives then the belief is that the state of serene, calm and harmony ripples out into the world influencing others.

How then do you teach peace in a yoga class?

Pranayama or breath practice lends itself to the quest for peace. Guide your students to slow down their breath and become aware of the peaceful rhythm of the inhalation and exhalation. Teach your students to passively accept their breath rather than force it to become deeper. You can be more literal about it as well encouraging students to draw peace into their body with each inhalation and release tension with each exhalation. Simply following the breath brings peace to the body and mind.

When leading guided relaxation help students to become aware of the spaces in their bodies where peace already exists. Then use breath and yoga postures to expand that feeling of peace throughout the class.

Mantras are a particularly effective way to shift our minds towards peace. I love Tich Nhat Hanh's mantra from Peace is Every Step "Breathing in I calm my body, Breathing out I smile." Tich Nhat Hanh teaches that peace and happiness are available to use if we can quiet our distracted minds.

The single pointed focus of yoga can help students move away from multi-tasking common in today's frantic world. Yoga postures and breath practice naturally center our students in a way that calms the mind and emotions giving a sense of peace.

When teaching the physical postures remind students to come into the present moment and become fully aware of their bodies. The postures can be an opportunity to let go of the worries of the past and future and come into the present moment of the body.

Teaching peace in a yoga class means reminding students to move with "ease and steadiness" as Rodney Yee says. How many times have you observed students struggling to make their posture look like the photo in Iyengar's Light on Yoga? Encourage students to find their own equilibrium and harmony in a pose, that state where peace exists. Yoga is not about the shape of the posture, rather the feeling of peace being cultivated in the body.

Consider the types of poses that you are teaching. Restorative poses such as legs up the wall can be fantastic for calming the central nervous system and bringing peace to the body. Balancing postures such as tree pose help the students to center themselves and come into the present moment.

Teaching peace in yoga class may simply mean adjusting the way you instruct your students. Move slowly, speak in a calm manner, create limitless space and time. Slow down your sun salutations taking extra time and breath. Remember in yoga we have "infinite time and no ambition."

Teaching peace in yoga class may seem elusive or even unfeasible. However, if we return to the core premise of yoga described by Patanjali as a means to "chitta-vrtti-nirohdah" or cease the turnings of the mind we are reminded that we are teaching peace every time we teach a yoga class. As yoga teachers we simply must return our intention and single pointed focus to this goal.

Graduation Gifts - What to Get the Grad

It's that time of year again and graduation parties abound. College and high school grads are partying up a storm and your weekends are planned around ceremonies and celebrations. On a budget? You can bring that special graduate a card with money, or you can give them something they'll use when they move into that new house or dormitory, and that they'll remember you by. Of course, what you get this person depends on his or her tastes and lifestyle. Former athlete? How about a comfy thick yoga mat? Many universities offer free yoga classes, and this will help your friend stay focused in his or her classes and avoid the freshman 15! There are many mats out there you can get for around 20 bucks.

And, let's not kid ourselves -- college kids and post-grads the world over celebrate with parties and libations. These celebrations may even carry on throughout the year. How about some cool barware or matching flask and martini glass? Bringing your own closed-container alcohol to the party is pretty smart these days, and your friend (or niece or nephew) will think of you every time they use it!

Maybe you'd like to go more of the sentimental route. You can get some pretty cool photo gifts made nowadays that will again, be under 20 bucks. How about an 8x10 framed collage showing all the good times you had together or funny old photos from elementary and high school activities? You could do the same with a coffee mug or photo coasters. These may even run you around $10 and you can do them for all your friends so they'll each have a personalized, usable gift from you. Everyone moving on to college needs a coffee mug reminding them of the good times back home.

Lastly, do you know of any larger gifts they'll be receiving? New laptop, camera or Wii? You could get them something to complement this new gift like games or software. This may run you a bit more, but if you're going to be around this person after graduation, chances are you'll get to play the game too!

These are just a couple ideas, but you get the picture. You don't have to shell out tons of cash during graduation days. Just get that special someone something that celebrates the next step in their life's journey, and that they'll use, and you're good!

Cure For Sciatica? 6 Natural Cures For Sciatic Nerve Pain That Will Restore You Back to New!

Fact number one; since you are looking for a cure for sciatica you should know that it is available. Fact number two; your condition is not exclusive to you alone. Sciatic nerve pain affects one to three percent of the world's adult population and this statistics is according to the Journal of Controversial Medical Claims.

Fact number three; sciatica is accompanied by certain physical symptoms, including, but not limited to, the following; excruciating back pain, weakness, a tingling sensation, and numbness, burning of the buttocks and legs, among others.

Fact number four; it is possible to get a cure for sciatica, in fact, you can get many cures for sciatica. Fact number five; the problem is not the availability of said cures, but how to determine which is most suitable for you and who you can trust to provide it.

Fact number six; in this article, you will discover 6 natural cures for sciatica which you can begin to apply today. Pay close attention because at the end you will be given the opportunity to discover a fantastic method to relieve your sciatica which has a 98.7% success rating...Let's move on shall we?

#1. Reiki...
Reiki is a type of deep relaxation technique which is popularly used by the Japanese to promote healing. It is commonly practiced by someone referred to as a Reiki practitioner.

It involves placing the hand on the affected area to clear away the negative energy while allowing positive life force energy to flow into the body in a healthy through the strengthening of the energy pathways.

Although the above may seem like gibberish to you right now, it is actually possible for you to learn how to perform Reiki for yourself.

#2. Rest, Ice and Heat...
Using ice and heat coupled with rest is a fantastic cure for sciatica which a lot of people employ to combat their condition.

It involves pausing what you are doing once you feel the pain coming on and finding a comfortable position to rest until the pain subsides and you are able to resume what you were doing.

You can also use an ice pack to fight sciatica because cold helps to reduce the inflammation of the sciatica nerves.

Ensure that you use an ice pack and not directly apply the ice to the skin so as not to damage your tissue. Use frozen vegetables wrapped in a towel if finding a pack proves difficult.

Alternatively, a heat pack may also be used. Just make sure not to apply the heat directly to your skin.

#3. Yoga...
Yoga is another cure for sciatica that is effective. Ensure that you work with an instructor who is a professional and is very experienced with dealing with sciatica patients, so to speak.

To keep pressure off the sciatic nerves, all forward bends should be done with your knees bent. Stay away from yoga posses that are discomfiting.

#4. Acupuncture...
If you are conversant with acupuncturists, then you will already be aware of the fact that the surfaces of our bodies have energy meridians running through and over it.

What acupuncture does is to cure sciatica by opening obstructed meridians through the use of tiny needles placed at very specific points in the body.

The aim of this is to restore normal energy flow so as to allow the body heal itself as usual while resuming nourishment through the meridians. Again, do not worry if this is not making much sense to you, your acupuncturist will know what to do okay?

#5. Massage Therapy...
For as long as time has existed, massage therapy has been employed as an effective method of curing many a malady; sciatica inclusive.

You can cure your condition using several massage techniques but one of the more popular ones is the use of two tennis balls placed underneath each buttock in a way that balances your spine.

What this does is to take the pressure off of your sciatic nerves by transferring the pressure onto the center of your buttocks and relaxing your gluteus and piriformis muscles.

#6. DTS Spinal Decompression...
This is a chiropractic treatment which consists of a computerized spinal stretching table. It is setup to help your injured disc realign and allow the healing process to begin by creating a vacuum effect.

FACT: Most conventional treatments for sciatica only work as a temporary band aid solution; they all fail to work in the long run!

YOGA SHAKTILIAOM

As a Hatha Yoga teacher, healer and personal development facilitator I combine the ancient wisdom of yoga with modern lifestyle-improvement healing techniques, and movement to provide a new perspective in my teachings. I use Intuition working with a compassionate attitude, respecting the integrity, natural intelligence, and self-knowledge of my students. I want to bring awareness and help people to relieve some of their suffering and to see them rediscover True happiness. Giving from the heart and not the ego. I think the essence of Yoga is very simple; it is about your happiness. Yoga is not just physical training. It is an authentic holistic tradition inclusive of contemplation & meditation. Its aim is for you to achieve your fullest potential in life doing whatever you choose to do but with awareness. Allowing yourself to JUST BE, letting go of the patterns and the stories that no longer serve you. Not needing to perfect any asana Accepting that there is not a "right" way to be in a posture, only a "safe" way for your body. Noticing what you are thinking about right now and Noticing what you are feeling in your body, right now ....just to experience each asana. Recognizing that your yoga teacher is human and not to be treated any differently than other person. Namasté

Great for Bikram - em -
It's heavier than a PVC mat but cleans easier. I have it for a couple of months and it's working great to practice Bikram Yoga with. I didn't care about the magazine subscription, and got a rebate instead.

not sticky - Amy Kim - Boston, MA USA
I am a Yoga Teacher. I am picky about yoga mats. This mat was such a let-down. Two minutes into a class, I was sliding all over the place on this mat, and this wasn't a particularly sweaty class. I eventually just folded it up and practiced on the bare floor. Do not waste your money on this product. If you buy it, you will need a towel or "Yogitoes."

It's as promised, a little on the thin side, but you get used to that. I think next time I'll spring for a thicker one, though.

Diet and Exercise Tips For the Elderly

Diet and exercise is an important part of everyone's life - especially so when you are older. Things may not be as easy as they used to be but there are ways to maintain a strong, flexible and healthy body when you're older.

Yoga - this form of exercise is very good for you - it's all about stretching and reaching your inner soul. You can do this form of exercise in the comfort of your own home and you only need a few things to get started. I'd recommend a yoga mat, blocks and a yoga belt. These can be bought all in one "starter kit" package or separately. You can even go to Yoga classes and you are then provided with the equipment.

Yoga is a simple form of exercise which isn't as strenuous as, say aerobics, you can easily perform these moves and you don't have to stretch all the way. Some moves are more advanced but there are simple basic moves which are perfect for keeping your body supple and strong without straining your joints by jumping all over the place. This form of exercise is ideal for someone with joint problems or who just wants to feel good about themselves.

Getting old is part of life and everyone has to deal with it. Your body is a natural entity and is designed for this. You can ensure a long life and a healthy body by maintaining your body's fitness throughout your early life but that doesn't mean you can't start when you're older. There are plenty of beginners classes available and beginners DVD's. You're never too old to start exercising. It's a good idea to check with your doctor before you start any exercise regime - no matter how old or young you are. Your doctor will be able to advise you on some steps you can take to achieve the healthy and supple body you are looking for.
